Il volume, rispetto al pur cospicuo corredo documentario ed iconografico della precedente edizione, prosegue nell’allargamento ed aggiornamento delle varietà conosciute e della storia postale. Esso riguarda tutta la storia del Regno d’Italia dalla sua Costituzione (1861) alla sua conclusione. I francobolli con i relativi annulli e gli interi postali ci accompagnano, quindi, nella affermazione, nel consolidamento e nel tramonto dell'Istituto monarchico anche attraverso i trasferimenti della Capitale d'Italia da Torino a Firenze ed, infine, a Roma.
Sono ampiamente documentate anche:
- Le aperture dei primi uffici postali all'estero quali premesse d'uno sviluppo delle espansioni coloniali.
- La prima guerra mondiale con il conferimento reale della luogotenenza a Tommaso di Savoia (1915/1919), comprese le franchigie militari, le emissioni per le terre redente Fiume ed il litorale Dalmata.
- Le emissioni di francobolli pubblicitari, per gli Enti Semistatali e di Servizio.
- Le emissioni di propaganda di guerra, la posta militare e le varie ed articolate occupazioni in periodo bellico, incluso il Regno d'Albania assunto dalla Corona sabauda nel 1939.
- Un intero capitolo riguarda la classificazione dei "numeri di tavola e di cilindro".
- Capitoli sono dedicati alle tavole sinottiche, alla dentellatura ed allo studio della filigrana.
- Sono, infine, inserite schede bibliografiche di Artisti grafici di chiara fama che hanno firmato la produzione filatelica nei primi decenni del Novecento.

2005 This volume differs from the previous edition, which was however rich in documents and iconographic material, thanks to enlargements and updates of the varieties and information on postal history included.
It deals with the history of the Kingdom of Italy, from the year of its Constitution (1861) to its decline.
Stamps, cancellations and items of Postal Stationery lead us through the establishment, consolidation and dissolution of the Italian monarchy, showing us how the Capital was moved from Turin to Florence and finally to Rome.
The volume provides also information on:
- The first postal offices built abroad in order to encourage the development of the colonies.
- The First World War and the Regency of Thomas of Savoy (1915/1919), the military franchises, the issues dedicated to the released territories, Fiume and the Dalmatian coast.
- The advertising stamps issued for State-Supported and Service Organizations.
- The war propaganda issues, the military mail and the occupations of the wartime, such as the Kingdom of Albania, which became part of the Savoy monarchy in 1939.
- A whole chapter on the classification of "plate and cylinder numbers".
- Chapters dedicated to synoptic tables, perforations and watermark studies.
- A final part including bibliographic notes on well-known graphic artists involved in the philatelic production of the first decades of the 20th century.
